Overcoming Obesity and Overweight through Nutrisystem

Ian Roberts, a study researcher of London School of Hygiene and tropical Medicine states that “everyone accepts that population growth threatens global environmental sustainability- our study shows that population fatness is a major threat.”

The study found that if the entire human population stepped on a scale, it would weight 316 million tons, or 632 billion pounds, out of which overweight people carry a total of 16 million tons of extra weight. Obese people carry 3.8 million tons of extra weight which is equivalent of 56 million normal-weight people.

What are overweight and Obesity?

Overweight and Obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that impairs health.

Using data from World Health Organization (WHO) since 2005, Roberts and colleagues estimates the world’s population in their study. They determined that the average body mass of the world was 62kg (136 pounds). North America recorded the highest average body mass of all continents with 80.7kg (178 pounds). However; North America has only 6% of the world’s population, but 34% all the biomass in the world due to overweight and obesity. In contrast, Asia has 61% of the world’s population but only 13% of the world’s biomass. The author of the study cautions that if the whole world imitated the US, the situation would be disastrous for the planet.

WHO defines overweight as BMI greater than or equal to 25 and BMI greater than or equal to 30 is Obesity. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index for weight-for-height measurement used to classify obesity and overweight in adults. Both obesity and overweight are linked to more deaths worldwide than underweight, which are easily avoidable and preventable through certain changes in the lifestyle and choosing the right food.

Coping Obesity through Nutrisystem

Obesity and overweight are mostly caused due to the following factors:

Unhealthy Diet- ingesting foods high in fats and sugar like fast food, fried food and sweets which are usually addictive that can lead to overeating and unhealthy weight gain.

Unhealthy lifestyle (Physical inactivity) – Sedentary people or inactive people burn less calories than active people. Modern lifestyle is the major contributor to inactive lifestyle especially children like spending too much time in front of the television, computer, digital games etc. also the mobility of people has decreased being dependent on automobiles for being mobile etc.

Psychological factors: People having emotional problems can influence binge eating.

Genetic Factors- a person is likely to be obese if both the father and mother are obese.

Disease and medication: some medications can lead to weight gain. The body fat increases when energy intake is more than the energy exhausted, however when calories ingested equals to calories exhausted , there is no storage of fat and hence no change in the body fat. Nutrisystem weight management and weight loss regime executes customized solution in prevention as well as overcoming obesity and overweight problems by delivering systematic meal plans for healthier eating and workout regimes which are manageable and fun.
