Television brings the entire world into your living room at teh touch of a button.
Television allows for an immersive experience that imitates how you would perceive a situation both with audio and video, and television allows for a constant stream of sports, news, and entertainment to come straight into your home. Recipients are more in control of what they watch and how they watch television now. This not only impacts consumers, but everything else involved in the production of television including advertising and content. Advertisers have to be more creative with placement within a show and the content has to mirror more real life situation often involving user participation. Also many networks have changed the way they schedule programming, moving to a more repetitive approach to give viewers more viewing options and thus capturing a bigger viewing audience.
Being broadcast over the public airwaves, many efforts have been made to make the content politically correct and not offend. The “one-way” nature of most episodic television programs and news have also been criticized.
Television over the Internet or “IPTV” is starting to make it’s introduction with streaming video and RSS with video enclosures. Webcams and microphones have now become commonplace allowing many people to create their own clips and upload them. The individual consumer is gaining complete control over his/her television viewing from Tivo, ReplayTV and other DVRs to internet television, where whole series are run with limited to no advertisement. Also iTunes has helped prove that individuals are willing to pay for television programing in order to have it when, where and how they want to view it.
